Barton, John, 1948-
Nature of biblical criticism / John Barton.
Louisville : Westminster John Knox Press, c2007.
Though biblical criticism in its traditional forms continues to be widely practiced, it faces increasing hostility on two fronts: from biblical conservatives, who claim it is inherently positivistic and religiously skeptical, and from postmodernists, who see it as driven by the falsities of objectivity and neutrality. In this overview of the key factors and developments in biblical studies, Barton demonstrates that these evaluations of biblical criticism fail to do justice to the work that has been done by critical scholars over many generations. He shows that traditional biblical criticism has had as its central concern a semantic interest: a desire to establish the "plain sense" of the biblical text, which in itself requires sensitivity to many literary aspects of texts. Therefore, he argues, biblical criticism already includes many of the methodological approaches now being recommended as alternatives to it - and, further, that the agenda of biblical studies is far less fragmented than often thought.

Getty-Sullivan, Mary Ann, 1943-
Parables of the kingdom : Jesus and the use of parables in the synoptic tradition / Mary Ann Getty-Sullivan.
Collegeville, Minn. : Liturgical Press, c2007.
"Do you not understand this parable?" is a question Jesus posed to his disciples (Mark 4:13). Just as the first disciples often did not understand Jesus’ many parables, so it is for listeners and readers nearly two thousand years later. In Parables of the Kingdom, Getty-Sullivan helps readers to "hear" and "see" and "understand" the parables of Jesus. She offers a general introduction to the use of parables in the life and ministry of Jesus and the early church. In addition, Getty-Sullivan helps readers learn to interpret parables, to enter into what the parables can reveal about Jesus and his audience, about the evangelists and their communities, and about how we are to understand the Kingdom of God today.

A commentary on the Apocalypse of John / [edited by] Edmondo F. Lupieri ; translated by Maria Poggi Johnson and Adam Kamesar.
Grand Rapids, Mich. : William B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., 2006.
Edmondo Lupieri’s main goal in A commentary on the Apocalypse of John is to introduce readers to the mental and spiritual world of John as both a first-century Jew and a follower of Jesus. Lupieri’s commentary offers both new proposals and traditional interpretations to shed light on this complex coda to the biblical message. Maintaining a strong historical perspective throughout, he examines the text of the Apocalypse line by line, paying careful attention to the Greek text, offering a new translation, making wide use of apocryphal, pseudepigraphal, and Qumran literature, and often analyzing John’s Apocalypse as compared to other Jewish apocalypses.

Drilling, Peter, 1942-
Premodern faith in a postmodern culture : a contemporary theology of the Trinity / Peter Drilling.
Lanham, Md. : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, c2006.
Since the European Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, traditional religious faith has been challenged from many sides. The Christian doctrine of God is no exception. Premodern faith in a postmodern culture acknowledges these challenges to the Christian doctrine of God and explains their sources in philosophical terms. Through thoughtful analysis, Drilling offers a way to meet these challenges so that Christian faith in the triune God survives and thrives. By using the theological method articulated by the philosopher-theologian Bernard Lonergan, this book demonstrates a reasonable and authentic process of coming to faith. This method includes directions believers can take, both theoretical and practical, to apply their faith in the Trinity.

Byars, Ronald P.
What language shall I borrow? : the Bible and Christian worship / Ronald P. Byars.
Grand Rapids, Mich. : W.B. Eerdmans Pub. Co., c2008.
Byars argues that the communal speech that truly honours God is, in fact, biblical language, which encompasses a range of forms - poetry and prose, song and proverb, parable and narrative. Byars explains how biblical language becomes liturgical language that pushes us beyond what we already think we know, requiring us to think anew about death and resurrection, beginnings and endings, and the life of faith. What language shall I borrow? is a reminder not to retreat from biblical language and images but to fully embrace them in our worship today.

Frame, T. R. (Thomas R.), 1962-
Children on demand : the ethics of defying nature / Tom Frame.
Sydney, N.S.W. : New South, UNSW Press, 2008.
This is a book that starts of by acknowledging the pain of infertility for many people and then examines the options for conceiving that have developed so rapidly since Louise Brown the first 'test tube baby' was born 30 years ago. Frame argues that ethics, law and community desires haven’t been able to keep up with technological advancement, and that this is a problem. He starts by looking at adoption, and includes details about his own experience as an adoptee. He writes about sperm and egg donors, asking whether it’s fair that they be allowed to remain anonymous; he writes about IVF and surrogacy and finishes by writing about cases where women have asked to use the dead husbands’ stored sperm to become pregnant. He looks at science, religion, philosophy, ethics but his starting point is always 'what’s best for the child'. His view that the ideal family is a mother, a father and a child will create some controversy.

Ehrman, Bart D.
Peter, Paul, and Mary Magdalene : the followers of Jesus in history and legend / Bart D. Ehrman.
Oxford : Oxford University Press, 2006.
Ehrman takes readers on a tour of the early Christian church, illuminating the lives of three of Jesus’ most intriguing followers: Simon Peter, the Apostle Paul, and Mary Magdalene. What do the writings of the New Testament tell us about each of these key followers of Christ? What legends have sprung up about them in the centuries after their deaths? Was Paul bow-legged and bald? Was Peter crucified upside down? Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute? In this work, Ehrman separates fact from fiction, presenting complicated historical issues in a clear and informative way and relating vivid anecdotes culled from the traditions of these three followers. He notes, for instance, that historians are able to say with virtual certainty that Mary, the follower of Jesus, was from the fishing village of Magdalene on the shore of the Sea of Galilee (this is confirmed by her name, Mary Magdalene, reported in numerous independent sources); but there is no evidence to suggest that she was a prostitute (this legend can be traced to a sermon preached by Gregory the Great five centuries after her death), and little reason to think that she was married to Jesus. Similarly, there is no historical evidence for the well-known tale that Peter was crucified upside down. Ehrman also argues that the stories of Paul’s miracle working powers as an apostle are legendary accounts that celebrate his importance.

Barnett, Paul (Paul William)
Paul : missionary of Jesus / Paul Barnett.
Grand Rapids, Mich. : W.B. Eerdmans Pub., c2008.
Was Paul the "second founder" of Christianity, striking off in directions Jesus never envisaged? In this study, Barnett sets out to establish that, current theories aside, the apostle was a true missionary of Jesus, authentically extending the Lord’s mission. Arguing that Paul’s own writings are supplemented by Luke’s contemporaneously written narrative of the Acts of the Apostles, Barnett follows Paul on a decade of travels, examining him in his historical context and as revealed by his writings.

Russell, Robert J.
Cosmology : from alpha to omega : the creative mutual interaction of theology and science / Robert John Russell.
Minneapolis : Fortress Press, c2008.
In these chapters, Russell takes theology and science beyond mere dialogue into a genuinely new relationship: "creative mutual interaction". The theological topics range from God, creation, suffering in nature, the theological significance of life in the universe to an eschatology involving the transformation of the universe into the new creation based on the bodily Resurrection of Jesus. Scientific topics include the Big Bang, inflation and quantum cosmologies, relativity, quantum mechanics, molecular and evolutionary biology, exobiology, and the modern mathematics of infinity. Although, as Barbour notes, Russell "avoids giving simple answers to complex questions", readers will be amply rewarded with for their journey into this new discipline.

Scribes, visionaries, and the politics of Second Temple Judea / Richard A. Horsley.
Louisville, Ky. : Westminster John Knox Press, c2007.
Judaism and Christianity both arose in times of empire, with roots in Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. In order to understand these religious movements, one must first understand the history and society of these imperial cultures. In these formative years, wisdom and apocalyptic traditions flourished as two significant religious forms. In Scribes, visionaries, and the politics of Second Temple Judea, New Testament scholar Horsley analyzes the function and meaning of these religious movements within their social context, providing essential background for the development of early Judaism and early Christianity.

Augsburger, David W.
Conflict mediation across cultures : pathways and patterns / David W. Augsburger.
Louisville, Ky. : Westminster/John Knox Press, c1992.
David Augsburger believes conflict is not only inevitable in human life, but also essential and possibly quite constructive. It is universal, distinct in every culture, and experienced uniquely by every individual. Augsburger explores variations in conflict and proposes a shift from an interpersonal approach to an international approach in resolving disputes. He examines interpersonal and group conflicts and provides a comparison of conflict patterns within and among various cultures: situational patterns versus cultural, individual versus communal, and direct versus indirect. In this study, Augsburger desensitizes the reader to his or her common sense about conflict, and sensitizes the reader’s "uncommon sense" about conflict, inviting individuals to learn from other cultures.
