Which ACD Course of Study?

The length of time to complete each ACD course is given below. Each of course can be studied part-time or full-time, except the Master of Ministry and Graduate Diplomas are only available on a part-time basis.

There are two semesters in each academic year, and each semester has two terms. A term is approximately 7 weeks.

Course Descriptions

Certificates in Ministry / Diploma of Pastoral Ministry

The Diploma and Certificates in Ministry are designed to meet the needs of Christian churches, particularly the Anglican, Catholic and Uniting Churches, for training of lay people within their denominations. Students who complete one of more of the courses are able to provide services such as:

  • lay ministry in a variety of settings
  • chaplaincy and pastoral care coordination
  • parish assistance and leadership in parish communities.

At each certificate level students choose a particular focus area that suits their needs.

Only existing students may enrol in these courses in 2010. Subject to government approval, we plan to introduce new courses in Christian life and ministry. Check this page for details during 2010.

Bachelor of Ministry / Associate Degree of Ministry

The Bachelor of Ministry is a professional degree which provides the foundation for lay or ordained ministries in Christian churches. The primary focus is on the practice of ministry based on a thorough biblical, historical and theological understanding. Students have the option of exiting after the second year of the course with an Associate Degree of Ministry.

The Associate Degree of Ministry provides a grounding in the full range of theological disciplines and the development of initial skills in pastoral ministry. Students may choose the Pastoral Ministry stream in preparation for the practical work of pastoral ministry, or the Theological Studies stream to gain a contemporary theoretical understanding to enhance their ministry. The Associate Degree provides a broad-based point of entry to employment in lay ministries.

Master of Ministry / Graduate Diplomas

The Master of Ministry is a professional degree for those involved in Christian ministry. The course aims to assist Christian leaders in developing their personal, spiritual, pastoral and intellectual capacities through empirical research and theological reflection and a ministry project. The Master of Ministry is only available on a part-time basis. Students have the option to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Ministry or a Graduate Diploma in Resource Ministry (distance education only).

Doctor of Ministry

The Doctor of Ministry is a professional degree which aims to assist Christian leaders in developing their ministry practice skills at an advanced level. Students engage with contemporary debates around ministry practice, engage in critical reflection on areas of ministry specialisation and carry out original research concerning practice in the profession. The Doctor of Ministry is only available on a part-time basis.
